Privacy
Portion is a calorie and protein diary for iPhone. This page says what data it handles, where that data goes and how you delete it. In short: your diary lives on your iPhone and, once you sign in, in your Portion account in the EU. Portion shows no ads, does not track you across apps and never sells your data.
Who is responsible
Portion is made by Ladislav Svabek, the developer named on Portion's App Store page, who is responsible for your data (the controller under the GDPR). Questions and requests: ladislav@genzify.org.
On your iPhone
Your diary (foods, meals, portions, weight, targets and notes), your food library and what the assistant remembers are stored on your iPhone. Backups and CSV exports you make in Settings are files you keep.
Dictation is turned into text on your iPhone.
Your Portion account
You sign in with Apple. Apple gives Portion a user ID and an email address, often a private relay address that Apple creates. Portion uses them to sign you in and to keep your data apart from everyone else's.
While you are signed in, a copy of your diary syncs to your Portion account, stored by Supabase in Frankfurt, Germany (EU). It lets you restore your diary on another iPhone.
The assistant
When you use the assistant (part of Portion Premium), what you type or dictate, the photos of meals, labels and menus you send, and, if you let it read your diary, the parts it needs (such as today's meals and your targets) go through Portion's server to OpenAI, which writes the answer.
Portion's server checks that you are signed in and counts your requests; the counts are kept for a day. It does not keep what you sent, unless you choose to share chats for review.
OpenAI handles these requests under its API terms: data sent through its API is not used to train its models, and OpenAI may keep it for up to 30 days to detect abuse. OpenAI may process requests outside the EU.
Sharing chats for review (your choice)
The first time you use the assistant, Portion asks whether you want to share your chats to help make the answers better. Only if you choose to share, Portion keeps your chat turns (what you asked, the answer, the foods it looked up and the first photo of a turn), your thumbs up or down and the corrections you make to what the assistant logged. The developer reads them to check that the answers are accurate.
Chats are kept for 60 days, photos for 14 days. You can stop sharing at any time in Settings, AI assistant; stopping deletes what was kept.
Food search
Everyday foods come from food tables in the app and on Portion's server. Searches on Portion's server are not stored; only a count of searches per account per day is kept, to prevent abuse.
Barcode scans and product searches go to Open Food Facts, a public food database. Portion sends only the barcode or the words you searched, never your account or your diary.
Subscriptions
Apple handles payment for Portion Premium; Portion never sees your payment details. To unlock Premium, Portion's server asks Apple about your subscription and keeps its status: the plan, until when it runs, whether it is the free week, whether it renews, and Apple's transaction number.
Who processes data for Portion
- Supabase: the database and server functions, in Frankfurt (EU).
- OpenAI: the assistant's answers.
- Apple: Sign in with Apple and App Store payments.
- Open Food Facts: product and barcode lookups.
Portion uses no advertising or analytics services.
How long data is kept, and deleting it
- Your diary on your iPhone stays until you delete it (Settings, Data, Delete all data) or delete the app.
- The copy in your account stays until you delete it (Settings, Account, Delete cloud data) or delete your account.
- Delete account (Settings, Account) deletes your Portion account and everything stored with it, including shared chats and the subscription status, and asks Apple to remove Portion from your Sign in with Apple list. Your iPhone keeps its diary. A subscription runs until you cancel it in your Apple ID settings.
- Request counts are kept for a day, search counts until the next day.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you can ask to see, correct, export or delete your data, and object to how it is used. Much of this works in the app: Settings, Data exports a backup, and Settings, Account deletes. For anything else, write to ladislav@genzify.org. You can also complain to your data protection authority; in Czechia that is the ÚOOÚ (uoou.gov.cz).
Health
Portion's numbers are estimates to help you keep track. They are not medical advice: for health questions, ask your doctor or a dietitian. Portion is not meant for children under 16.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version appears here with a new date, and the app tells you about important changes.
